Also known as the Judas Tree, the redbud is a small tree reaching 15-30 feet in height, commonly planted as an ornamental in yards and gardens. They can grow in hardwood forests commonly beside oak, basswood, and ash. Redbuds prefers rich, moist soil. In spring, the trees produce lavender to pink flowers in clusters before they unfold their leaves. They also produce a rose- to brown-colored pod about 3 inches long.
